I mostly travel by bus but there are times when they are less frequent or have stopped running. Taxis or cabs are another way of getting around but the prices can vary - it can get expensive during heavy traffic

Key information
1. ‘Black cabs’ are usually more expensive than other taxis/ cabs
Uber and other app-based companies (there are lots around!) are usually cheaper but look out for price increases during busy times.
- Look out for discount vouchers and options to share a taxi to reduce your costs
2. Public transport is usually quicker and cheaper, even during the night
Many buses and trains run throughout the day and night. Check your journey time using a free navigation app such as Google Maps to decide the best option for you. Remember that London traffic can affect your taxi/ cab costs.
3. You can hail a black cab, but minicabs need to be pre-booked
- Flag down a black cab by waving your hand to the side on the road
- Pick up other taxis at a taxi rank, usually found outside stations and airports
- Pre-book a minicab by phone or using an app
4. Never get into a taxi if you are unsure whether it is official
It’s better to pre-book or hail a black cab even if it’s more expensive. Always check that the driver’s ID is visible in the car.
5. ‘Black cabs’ use a meter, others have a set fare
Minicabs do not have meters - they have a set fare that will be shown on their app or explained by phone when you book. If you’re unsure about the price, ask before you set off!
6. Reduced fares are available for people with disabilities
If you have difficulties using public transport because of a serious mobility or sight impairment, you may get discounted taxi fares under the Taxicard scheme.
- You will need to apply to Haringey Council - find out more online here.
